Matt's Wild Cherry

This spring I bought a couple of Matt's Wild Cherry tomato seedlings from a local organic farmer, and I sure am glad that I did. They are growing quite nicely in my sad little garden. Cameron, Olivia, and I collected a small harvest this afternoon to put in this evenings dinner: a spinach and pasta alfredo that I made without a recipe, and I'm pretty proud of myself because it was delicious!

OK, so this photo doesn't really do it justice, but it really was yummy! And the best part is that Cameron and Olivia gobbled all the tomatoes right out of it. If we grow it, they will eat it!

Isn't she cute?

Tiny Harvest

I will admit I am not a very good gardener. I struggle to find the time. But we did manage to harvest some peas. The kids enjoyed them as a little snack today, which I found quite rewarding.

My cherry tomatoes and heirloom tomatoes are also doing well. Damien just planted an eggplant and some peppers which were generously given to us by the Blackwelders. Thank you!

Sowing the Seeds...

...of organic Roma and beefsteak tomatoes, organic peas and organic basil.

Spring is only two days away. For our first "welcome Spring" activity, Cameron, Damien, Olivia and I all participated in sowing seeds in our Burpee Eco-Friendly Seed Starting Kit. Most of the seedlings should appear within 7-14 days. The kids are very excited to watch these little seeds grow. I'm really looking forward to gardening with them this year!

I have been dreaming of my vegetable garden for a few years now. We have turned the soil every year and added organic compost last year. The soil is ready. Now we just need some more of these warm days to melt off that last layer of snow!

I'm going to start small. I might try some carrots as well. I don't want to overwhelm myself!

Stay tuned for more "welcome Spring" activities in the Sevin household!

Grandpa's Garden

Cameron spent some time this morning in Grandpa's garden. Last October my Dad picked a pumpkin from this garden and carved Cameron's first Jack-O-Lantern. Cameron picked out this year's pumpkin. It is still green, we just need to wait for it to turn orange. I took a ton of photos and they all captured some terrific moments. I had a hard time selecting which ones to post because they all came out so well! Here are a select few of my favorite moments.
Cameron loved helping Grandpa in the garden. He picked a tomato and took a bite of fresh cucumber, which he spit into his hand and threw on the ground! He was so interested in the things that were growing. He would squat down and peer through the leaves looking for more pumpkins, tomatoes and peas. Next year I plan to start a garden with Cameron's help. It will be a great experience to share together!
