Day 58 - In My Driveway

I started a photography class last night.  I have a good feeling that it is going to be fantastic and I will learn some things that will improve my photography.  The instructor spent some time sharing his photography experience and explained what we would learn.  Then we went around the room and told him and each other what we were hoping to gain from the class.  I explained my 365 project and that I was feeling stuck creatively.  His advice to me was to stop trying to find a photo.  To paraphrase him, we have all had those days when we take our camera and go out and try to find something amazing to take a photo of and we come back with nothing spectacular.  Then there are the days we are out and we see something amazing to photograph, but we don't have our camera.  He suggested going out in my yard and looking around.  In a class he had taught before he had students take a photo of something different in their yard for a few consecutive days.  Of course, I am not explaining it as well as he did, but I took his advice, and this is what I shot today.  I like it.  I really like the "bokeh" effect from the sun shining on the snow at the bottom of the photo.  I took three pictures of the same thing, but adjusted the SS and aperture until I got the effect I liked.  This shot is SOOC.

I am looking forward to the next class.

  1. Thank you for your inspiring words. I too feel like I get stuck in a rut and can't figure out what to photograph. I think I'm making it too hard.

  3. I think I'm making it too hard too. What a shame; I'm more than likely passing up some awesome photo opportunities that way.

This is a GREAT photo! I love the bokeh!

  6. I love you breaking that down for us. Thank you! Please share what you've learned.. please please! You'll look back and maybe appreciate that journal, too. I know I will! I took this to heart as my friend came over tonight and had seen this post. I will tag your post in my photo tonight, because I just found something I liked, but am tired of trying to do better every day. :) Beautiful picture, beautiful bokeh. I usually just do this on accident. I don't really know how to do it on purpose.
Thank you so much for your post!!

  7. One of the best things I ever learned from a photo course I took years ago is the instructor said, after you take your shot, step back and find another angle to take it from and see what else you can come up with. I've gotten some really great photos by following his advice. I like the simplicity of your photo today, and yet it tells quite a story.
